Audrie was one of my professional beta readers on Book 2 in the Apidecca Duology. She came highly recommended by some seasoned indie authors, and didn’t disappoint. Even though I hadn’t asked for a full edit, she gave very thorough feedback. Audrie praises what is effective and identifies the things that hold a story back. She has an eye for inconsistencies and plot beats that don’t come across as they should. With her perspective, I could identify what wasn’t landing the way I’d hoped. Every writer has those niggling things that bother them about their story … things you can’t place. Well, Audrie brought them into focus for me. When I got stuck with ideas for fixes, she was ready with some suggestions. I can even credit her with a change of setting in a chapter towards the end of the book – it’s much improved. One thing I especially enjoyed was the way she shared her emotional journey throughout her beta read. The capitalised reactions, underlined words and gorgeous sketches made her annotations special. Much like a character in my book whose senses are dulled to the food he cooks for others, I get to a point where over familiarity with my work keeps me from tasting my words as a reader would. Beta readers who know what you're trying to achieve help you get a feel for your story again, and Audrie excelled at this.

If I was to describe her beta reading with a single word, it would be experiential. It’s everything you could want for someone watching your back (what beta reading should be), as she looks at the process with the eyes of a reader but with the added mind of an editor. She takes an approach to beta reading such that even large corrections are made to seem small. Her articulate notes leave both a lot of useful feedback and opportunities for inferencing other suggested changes. You’ll also get the experience of her artistic stylings and reader-based comments in the margins. I would recommend Audrie Hopper as a beta reader to anyone. Full stop. In all honesty, writing a book and having her be a part of it is like having a signature recipe that people absolutely fall in love with, but a secret ingredient you never tell. What can I say about Audrie as a beta reader? I could say she's rubbish, but that would be a total lie. Her insights will not only improve your writing but also how you approach your next book. Without her invaluable insights, my book would have been much worse. Her notes are really fun to read and every so often you get a Glorius little hand-drawn image.
